Central team visits Wayanad disaster spots, Kerala seeks Rs 2k crore for reconstruction

WAYANAD: The state govt has demanded an allocation of Rs 2,000 crore from the Centre as reconstruction cost following the destruction caused by Mundakkai landslide. The cabinet subcommittee overseeing the rehabilitation activities raised the request with the high-level central team that visited the landslide-hit areas on Friday. Also, central help has been sought for taking up debris cleaning activities, which is expected to take around 90 days," PWD minister P A Mohammed Riyas said.
Expressing hope that the central team has understood the magnitude of the disaster, he said the govt had requested including the disaster in the L3 category.
'People will be shifted from relief camps soon'
PWD minister P A Mohammed Riyas said states that witnessed disasters frequently were allocated substantial sums in the recent budget. The team had also been apprised of demands for relaxation in loan repayment, he said.

The minister said the official death count stood at 226, while 197 body parts had been recovered. Volunteers have reportedly spotted three bodies and a body part in their search on Friday. One more body and three body parts were laid to rest on the day.
Riyas said the shifting of people from relief camps to houses as part of temporary rehabilitation would commence soon. As many as 125 houses, including govt quarters, have been identified for the purpose.

The central team has reportedly reached an assessment that as per information available, the landslide had a huge impact and an expert study is required. District collector M R Meghasree and state disaster management authority member-secretary Sekhar L Kuriakose briefed the team - led by Rajiv Kumar, joint secretary, ministry of home affairs - on various aspects.
Besides the chairman, the team comprises K Ponnuswamy, director of oilseeds development, Hyderabad; V Ambili, deputy director, Geological Survey of India; B T Sreedhara, superintending engineer, ministry of road transport and highways; Supriya Malik, deputy director of expenditure under finance department; K V Prasad, director, CWC; R K Tiwari, deputy director, department of power; Ramavatar Meena, deputy secretary, rural development department and Tapas Marta, geo hazard scientist, National Remote Sensing Centre. It visited Chooralmala and Mundakkai in the afternoon and held talks with survivors.
